When Apple unveiled iOS 18 last year, it was touted to be one of the biggest upgrades to the iPhone’s operating system in years. But now that we are just three months away from iOS 19’s announcement, the rumour mill has its eyes on the tech giant’s upcoming software. From new features to release date, here’s what we know so far about iOS 19.
iOS 19 new features
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, iOS 19 will be “one of the most dramatic software overhauls” in the company’s history. The report also claims that the update “will fundamentally change the look of the operating system.”
If true, this might mean that we will see new icons, menus, apps, window elements and system buttons. Citing people familiar with the matter, Gurman hints that the new design will be loosely based on visionOS, Apple’s operating system for its MR headset – Vision Pro.
Rumour also has it that iOS 19 will have an updated Camera app, which is said to offer more screen space for photo previews and feature translucent pop-up menus that lets users swipe through different camera modes.
Smarter Apple Intelligence and AI powered Siri
Apple Intelligence has been quite underwhelming for the most part, but Apple might change that with iOS 19. Instead of rolling out a bunch of new features, speculations suggest that Apple Intelligence will be able to interact with built-in apps like Samsung did with the Galaxy S25 series.
As for Siri, it looks like the personal assistant will be getting generative AI treatment with iOS 19. This means we will have to wait a few more months before Siri gets features like onscreen awareness, personal context and deeper app integration. Apple is also reportedly working on a large language model for Siri, which will put it in competition with the likes of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, but that will likely be a part of iOS 20.
iOS 19 release date
If everything goes according to plan, Apple will preview iOS 19 at the WWDC in June, which will then be followed by a beta before being released in September alongside new iPhones.
