Google rolls out fix for Chromecast ‘untrusted device’ error following outage | Technology News
Google on Thursday, March 17, said that Chromecast devices “should now function normally” days after users reported seeing an ‘untrusted device’ error in apps like YouTube upon selecting the devices in question as Cast targets.
“We sincerely apologise for this disruption and any inconvenience it may have caused and we are committed to ensuring that all users are back up and running as quickly as possible,” Google said in an email to affected users.
The issue seems to have affected only second-generation Chromecasts and music-streaming Chromecast Audio devices. Besides the ‘untrusted device’ error, screenshots posted by affected users also carried text that said “device couldn’t be verified. This could be caused by outdated device firmware.”
Google also announced a fix for those who attempted a factory reset during the disruption. “For users who have performed a factory reset, you will need to update your Google Home app to the latest version (3.30.1.6 for Android and 3.30.106 for iOS) to set up your Chromecast (2nd gen) or Chromecast audio device again,” the email read.

Since the issue isn’t affecting those with Chromecast (3rd gen) and Chromecast Ultra, many thought Google might have bricked their older device or may be on the verge of announcing its end-of-life.
“Everything should now function normally,” the company added. Google further said that the new Home app update “may take a few days to roll out to everyone.”
While Google did not reveal the cause of the Chromecast disruption, a user on Reddit speculated that it was due to an intermediate CA (Certificate Authority) that was valid for 10 years for the second-generation Chromecast devices. This certificate expired on March 9, and therefore, apps that relied on this were likely unable to validate the Chromecast as a genuine product, as per the online post.
