Before I begin, I must admit that my AirPods Pro 2 (2022) is a constant during my everyday chores. Be it heading to work, catching the metro, simply lazing in the backseat on a long drive, or even getting involved in some deep work. The reasons I loved the AirPods Pro 2 include super clean audio, bass, and an outstanding active noise cancellation (ANS). There is nothing that can separate me from the AirPods. But something changed recently after I got the new OnePlus Nord Buds 3.
As we know, over the years, OnePlus has made a name for itself by offering feature-rich devices at competitive prices. The OnePlus Nord Buds 3 carries forward this tradition and stands out in the overcrowded true wireless stereo (TWS) space. The Nord Buds 3, I feel, is ideal for tech-savvy professionals who seek premium audio without burning a hole in their wallets. I must say, at the price point of Rs 2,299, these earbuds come with some great features that you usually see on high-end TWS earbuds.
It’s all about the bass!
The new Nord Buds 3 comes with a 12.4mm extra-large driver featuring a titanised diaphragm. This detailing in its hardware combined with its BassWave 2.0 technology offers a sound profile that offers a punchy bass without compromising on the highs and the mids. From Stop Snitching by YG to Ranjish hi Sahi by Ali Sethi, the Nord Buds 3 offers crisp highs and a well-balanced overall sound. I particularly enjoyed listening to podcasts, where the audio felt closer to life than overprocessed.
For bass heads like me, the proprietary BassWave 2.0 can be activated to boost low frequencies even further. I have been watching the screen adaptation of author Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale – a dark grisly show with some intense moments and a sombre background score. The Nord Buds 3 elevated the high moments with its dynamic bass, I could feel the spine-chilling thrill.
The Sound Master EQ comes with three presets – Balanced, Serenade, and Bass. Again, there is Game Mode for high-octane gaming and Dual Connection that allows you to connect two devices at once.
Active Noise Cancellation on a budget
For me, the standout feature has to be the active noise cancellation capability. The Nord Buds 3 offers up to 32dB noise reduction, and impressive isolation, something which has become a mainstay on its expensive counterparts. To test, you can bring the volume down to zero and switch between the noise controls. Along with the ANC mode, the Transparency Mode allows users to stay aware of their environment when needed. However, this feature may not be great for outdoor activities where situational awareness is vital.
The Nord Buds 3 comes with a dual-mic system that is backed by an AI-based algorithm for clarity of calls. OnePlus claims that the feature is designed to offer accurate voice by reducing background noise. I found it to be working sufficiently during calls on the busy streets.
I found the battery life to be one of Nord Bud 3’s strongest USPs. The company claims that the TWS offers 12 hours of continuous playback on a single charge with ANC off. It extends to an impressive 43 hours when including the charging case. With ANC, you can still expect around eight hours from the buds alone and up to 32 hours with the case. In a quick 10-minute charge, the device offers up to 11 hours of playtime, this to me will work well with those bingeing on OTT shows.

Verdict
The OnePlus Nord Buds 3 punches above its weight. I am aware that audiophiles may still go for their higher-end options, however, the Nord Buds 3 is a great combination of performance and affordability. Along with strong battery life, fast charging, and great sound, this could be an attractive option for anyone who prioritises quality over quantity.
Even though there are some remarkable contrasts between AirPods Pro 2 and the OnePlus Nord Buds 3, the intention here is not to draw parallels but to see how depriving myself of my daily driver would feel. In my experience, the Nord Buds 3 is a great choice for decent sound and ANC. Although it lacks some high-end features seen on AirPods Pro 2, Nord Buds can be a solid choice for those seeking great performance for everyday use.
