ONDC crosses 200 million customer transactions, with 100 million added in six months | Technology News

The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), a government-backed interoperability project for e-commerce, has crossed more than 200 million transactions since its inception two years ago.

Launched in September 2022, ONDC has emerged as an open commerce alternative to e-commerce giants such as Amazon and Walmart-backed Flipkart. It is operated by a government-funded non-profit organisation that lets tech companies and other developers build new services for online shoppers and businesses by providing a set of APIs to its network.

The apps hosted on ONDC’s network offer services in areas ranging from food delivery and mobility to retail and logistics. The government-backed framework also expanded into digital lending in August last year.

While ONDC grew to 100 million transactions over the span of 20 months (January 2023 to August 2024), it added another 100 million customer transactions in just six months, the organisation said.

“The speed at which ONDC is scaling is a testament to India’s readiness for a more inclusive and accessible digital economy. And this is just the beginning,”  T Koshy, the MD and CEO of ONDC, said in a statement.

He held that the 200 million-milestone validates ONDC’s belief that an open network can drive large-scale transformation by giving equal opportunity to businesses of all sizes, breaking monopolies, and creating an ecosystem where innovation thrives.

“There are many more use cases brewing within ONDC which will see the light of day soon,” Koshy added.
