Oppo Find X8 Pro review

Finding X during maths class was among the toughest tasks back in my school days, as it involved finding derivatives of complex mathematical equations. But finding the X in Oppo’s latest flagship smartphone — Find X8 Pro — was a cakewalk in comparison.
Oppo, after a long gap, is back with a stellar flagship smartphone for the Indian market. I have been testing the new Find X8 Pro for over two weeks and here is my review. From design to cameras, performance to AI features, here I attempt to give you a comprehensive view of this refreshingly bold flagship.
Xtra-ordinary yet classy design

Today, finding a smartphone that looks elegant is daunting considering the market which is brimming with all kinds of devices. Oppo has somehow stood tall with its new offering. The Oppo Find X8 Pro has a distinctive look with an eye on symmetry. Four equidistant circular lenses inside the large camera island with the Hasselblad logo at the centre give it a polished look. One can also spot the iconic orange dot at the bottom of the camera island, a distinctive feature of Hasselblad cameras.
On the front, the screen has some of the narrowest bezels, again identical across the screen, which makes the phone look nothing less than a true flagship smartphone. However, compared to some other high-end Android devices, the 1.5K resolution seems like a bit of a letdown, although it gets as bright and vivid as any other modern flagship smartphone. The phone is also IP69 rated, making it cold and hot water resistant, and possibly one of the first smartphones that can even be used while you take a shower.
Overall, the Oppo Find X8 Pro is easily one of the best-looking Android flagship smartphones of 2024.
Cameras that don’t disappoint

Oppo is offering a 50MP quad-camera setup. Interestingly, when most smartphone brands claim to feature a 50MP quad camera setup on their latest devices they usually mean that their phones have one or two 50MP cameras followed by three or two low-resolution sensors. Contrary to this, Oppo Find X8 Pro features four 50MP cameras that can shoot 4K videos with up to 60fps in Dolby Vision format. There is no 8K video recording support, something I found to be a bit of a miss considering that it is now available on more affordable devices.
The colour science among the four 50 MP cameras is consistent, allowing users to capture a single scene from four different perspectives. Out of these four lenses, the device has an ultra-wide angle lens, a 3x telephoto lens, and a 6x telephoto lens. During testing, I noticed that the phone takes excellent pictures in almost any lighting condition, and the ability to shoot portrait shots at 1x, 2x, 3x, and 6x also enables users to express their point of view as needed.

While I can go on and on about the cameras, here are some of the pictures captured on the Oppo Find X8 Pro that explain all these things in more detail and also in a way that’s easy to understand.

Exceptional performance
One of the fastest Android smartphones in the market. (Image credit: Vivek Umashankar)
The Oppo Find X8 Pro is powered by the flagship Android SoC, the Mediatek Dimensity 9400 chipset, paired with up to 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage. This latest chip by MediaTek offers almost laptop-like performance in single-core and multi-core CPU tests. To put it into context, the Oppo Find X8 Pro’s single-core CPU performance is almost as good as the multi-core CPU performance of a mid-range phone, hence, there are no tasks or games that Find X8 Pro cannot handle, and its AnTuTu score of 2.5 million (in the performance mode) is a testament to the same.
I played a slew of video games on the Find X8 Pro, including titles like ‘Clash of Clans’ to ‘Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile’. The performance is excellent. Even with continued gaming, I did not notice any drop in performance. However, the device tends to get warm, but that is a common sign on any high-performance smartphone.
Smooth feature-rich software experience

The Oppo Find X8 Pro is one of the first phones to launch in India with Android 15-based ColorOS 15, which looks and feels different from any other Android skin with support for next-level personalisation. This is also one of the cleanest implementations of ColorOS that I have seen in years, with almost no bloatware. It only includes essential apps and services that most smartphone users need daily.

I liked the highly customisable lock screen, although I am a bit unhappy with the new notification panel, which is more like the one on iOS. One needs to swipe from the left to access notifications and from the right to access quick settings. However, there is an option to choose the legacy notification panel, which combines both quick settings and notifications under one roof.
Besides, it also introduces some of the core Android features, including Google’s Circle to search and find my device even when the device is off. Overall, the software experience on the Find X8 Pro is on par with the best of smartphones, if not better. Oppo is promising five years of OS upgrades, which is a bit less than what Google and Samsung are offering. However, it should keep the device latest and up-to-date for years to come.
AI that makes photo and text editing a lot simpler
Oppo’s implementation of AI on the Find X8 Pro is pretty straightforward. There are a few AI features that can make your photos look better; these include reflection remover, unwanted subject eraser, unblur, and resolution enhancer. Then there are other sets of text editing features such as proofreading, summarising, and translating within a single app called Documents. These AI features work as expected, but when compared to the latest AI features from Samsung and Apple, Oppo’s features feel a bit basic.
Large battery, really fast charging

The Find X8 Pro is equipped with a massive 5,910 mAh battery with support for 80W fast charging, which charges the phone much faster than the iPhone 16 or the Galaxy S24. The charger comes in the box, again one of the first phones with a Silicon Carbon battery. Not just that, there is also 50W wireless charging support along with reverse wireless charging. In my two weeks of testing, the phone lasted for the entire day, and when I needed a quick refill, just a few minutes of charge time got the phone up and running.

Xtra features
Alert slider and quick button are Find X8 Pro’s exclusive features. (Image credit: Vivek Umashankar/The Indian Express)
The Oppo Find X8 Pro has the most number of extra-hardware features that one can ask for. This includes the alert slider, a fan-favourite feature that has been borrowed from the OnePlus, which makes switching between ring, vibrate, and mute a lot easier. On top of that, this is also one of the first modern Android smartphones to implement a physical camera button known as the quick button, which works similarly to the Camera Control on the iPhone 16 series.
The quick button can be used to trigger the camera from anywhere; however, it only works when the phone is in landscape mode. I hope Oppo will push a software update to change it. I have a mixed opinion on the quick button, which makes it easy to zoom in and zoom out. I felt that one really needs a steady hand to use this feature, especially while capturing a picture and achieving the exact amount of zoom using on-screen controls is much easier than using this physical button.
A well-curated smartphone
A well-rounded flagship smartphone. (Image credit: Vivek Umashankar/The Indian Express)
Last but not least, what makes the Oppo Find X8 Pro a great smartphone is the fact that all of the seven above-mentioned features come together really well, making it an exceptional Android smartphone that has something for everyone. If you are a photographer, the phone offers a great set of cameras; for gamers, there is flagship performance; for software enthusiasts, there is the latest Android 15; and on top of that, the large battery ensures more than the all-day battery. Overall, the Oppo Find X8 Pro sets a new benchmark in the world of Android, making it the go-to smartphone for anyone who wants nothing but the best.
